REDUCING STRESS FOR BUSINESS PEOPLE AND PROFESSIONALS THROUGH RUNNING

By KENNETH A. VERCAMMEN

Business people, professionals and litigation attorneys are under a drive to perform their best and provide success for clients. Putting customer and client responsibility first sometimes leads to constant stress. Preparing for meeting, scheduling clients, and juggling calendars creates worry and often fatigue. To be a professional you need to also be in top physical shape. Running has given me an edge in my trial practice.

I started racing in high school and improved to be a successful college athlete. Even while attending Widener/ Delaware Law School in the early 1980's I ran races every weekend. In December, 1991 I was fortunate to start training under the personal guidance of Grandmaster Y. B. Choi, a world renowned expert in Tae Kwon Do- Korean Karate. Cross- Training of running and Tae Kwon Do provides persons with confidence, discipline, respect, and weight control. These are important qualities to trial attorneys.

Each year I now run between 25-40 running races, including a few triathlons during the summer. I enjoy seeing the many friends I have made at races over the weekend. I joined 4 different running clubs to meet new people.

Training to compete in weekend 5k races now provides me and many others with a meaningful training regime to provide motivation, fitness, concentration, coordination, flexibility, confidence, and self-control. Morning running work outs help ease the stress level. We achieve a strong mind and strong body with running- no matter what our age, sex, weight or skills.

Running races provides positive self-image and psychological benefits. Competition inspires confidence, which results in a sense of achievement and success. Running helps us cope with life's difficulties and learn how to persevere.

No matter what your age, career, or interests, running will help you gain new confidence in handling daily concerns and feel better about yourself both physically and mentally.

Running can be your outlet for stress and tension. It will increase your stamina, expand your cardiovascular fitness and improve your overall physical condition.

Even with a family and increased business commitments, it is important to take the time out to do things you enjoy. A strong mind and a strong body will help you in all careers and all sports.
